I-70 Crash Near Herman Gulch Leaves One Dead, Youth Hockey Team Injured

Idaho Springs, CO – A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 70 near Herman Gulch on thursday morning has resulted in one fatality and left several members of a youth hockey team injured. The incident involved a colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) snowplow, a passenger van carrying the Santa Clarita Flyers under-twelve girls hockey team from California, and two additional passenger vehicles.

Colorado State Patrol responded to the scene at approximately 8:53 a.m. in the eastbound lane near Milepost 216. Authorities confirmed the driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.

One juvenile passenger sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a regional trauma center for treatment. Seven other occupants of the van – four juveniles and three adults – were transported via ambulance to a local hospital. One adult passenger declined medical transport. Fortunately,no injuries were reported from the occupants of the two other vehicles involved in the crash.

As of Thursday afternoon, the eastbound lanes of I-70 between Exit 218 near Herman Gulch and Exit 221 near Bakerville remain closed as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident and work to clear the scene.Motorists are advised to check COTrip for the latest road conditions and closures before traveling.
