Post-Race Analysis: Patience and a Fast Lap
Following the race, van der Poel expressed his satisfaction with the win, acknowledging the challenging conditions and the strength of his competitor. He described the race as “strange” due to the course conditions,making it difficult to establish a important lead.
“It was a bit strange to race in Gavere in these conditions. It was a really different dynamic than usual, making a difference was quite difficult. And Thibau was really strong. On this circuit I expected it, to be honest. I didn’t expect that I would be able to peel it off.It was certainly very strong and in these conditions it is very difficult to race while staying very close to the wheel,” van der Poel stated.
He explained his winning strategy revolved around patience and timing. With three laps remaining, nys launched an attack, prompting van der Poel to respond with a sustained effort over an entire lap.
“With three laps to go, when he launched his attack, I decided to do a full lap. I think I made a small mistake on the wheel and that gave me the chance to create a gap. Today it was about having patience and knowing how to wait.It’s very difficult to run like this, you see that the differences aren’t many. For this reason I decided to bet on a fast lap in the hope that it would be enough and luckily it was. Or else I think today it would have been decided with a sprint,” he added.
