Soham Murderer Ian Huntley Dies in Prison After Attack
Ian Huntley, the man convicted of murdering schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, has died in hospital after being attacked in prison. The 52-year-old suffered serious head injuries in the assault at HMP Frankland, a high-security prison in County Durham, on February 26, 2026.
Huntley was on life support following the attack, during which he was repeatedly hit over the head with a metal bar, according to reports from the BBC. His life support was withdrawn after brain tests indicated he was in a vegetative state, The Independent reported. He was officially pronounced dead on March 7, 2026.
The Soham Murders
In August 2002, ten-year-old Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman disappeared from Soham, Cambridgeshire, sparking a nationwide search. According to Wikipedia, Huntley, a school caretaker, lured the girls into his home and murdered them before disposing of their bodies in an irrigation ditch near RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.
The girls’ disappearance and the subsequent investigation captivated the nation. Huntley’s initial cooperation with police raised suspicions and his false alibi, provided by his girlfriend Maxine Ann Carr, eventually unraveled.
Legal Consequences
Huntley was convicted of the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman on December 17, 2003, and sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment. The High Court later set a minimum term of 40 years. As detailed on Wikipedia, Carr received a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
Investigation into the Attack
Durham Constabulary is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack on Huntley. A man in his mid-40s is currently in detention in connection with the incident, but has not yet been arrested. A file is being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service to consider charges, the BBC reports.
The Ministry of Justice stated that the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman “remains one of the most shocking and devastating cases in our nation’s history, and our thoughts are with their families.”
