Ian Russell Screens Cinema Warning Against Meta Ahead of The Social Reckoning Release

Ian Russell will appear in a cinema advertising campaign screening across the United Kingdom this week, telling audiences before screenings of The Social Reckoning that “Instagram helped kill my daughter.” The 30-second advert will run ahead of the film’s release on Friday. The advert promotes the Molly Rose Foundation (MRF), a charity established following the 2017 death of his 14-year-old daughter, Molly Russell, who took her own life after viewing harmful content on Instagram.

In the broadcast appeal, Ian Russell states that “too little has changed” regarding online safety since his daughter’s death. He directly addresses cinema-goers to ask for donations to the foundation to “stop companies like Meta endangering young people like Molly.” The campaign gained momentum after Pearl & Dean, a cinema advertising company, offered free screen space to the charity. Everyman, Curzon, Showcase, and AMC cinemas will air the advertisement prior to showings of the film.

Inside the Cinema Advertising Campaign and Media Support

Bauer Media Audio, which owns the Absolute Radio, Kiss, and Jazz FM brands, is donating free advertising space for a separate audio advert. Voiced by Ian Russell, the second spot directs parents seeking support and advice to contact the Molly Rose Foundation directly. Kathryn Jacob, chief executive of Pearl & Dean, stated that audiences appreciate contextually relevant advertising. She noted that the team at the Molly Rose Foundation worked closely to deliver a campaign that aligns thematically with the feature film. The advertisements coincide with the theatrical release of The Social Reckoning, an Aaron Sorkin-scripted film focusing on Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. The production chronicles Haugen’s disclosures regarding internal corporate research at Meta. That research detailed how Instagram content negatively impacted the mental health of teenage girls. When those internal documents first emerged publicly, Meta stated that the coverage focused on a limited set of findings and cast them in a negative light.

The Social Reckoning Cast and Legislative Background

The film features Oscar winner Mikey Madison portraying Frances Haugen, while Succession star Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. The narrative revisits Haugen’s 2021 testimony before the US Congress, where she alleged that the social media corporation prioritized astronomical profits over user safety, harmed children, and destabilized democracies. During a 2022 inquest into Molly Russell’s death, a coroner ruled that she died from an act of self-harm while suffering from depression and the negative effects of online content. The coroner found that algorithmic curation pushed harmful material to the teenager that she had not actively requested. Following the inquest, Ian Russell accused Meta of guiding his daughter on a detrimental trail of life-sucking content involving self-harm, suicide, and depression. Meta subsequently made a financial donation to the Molly Rose Foundation in lieu of a legal settlement to the family. Following the release of the documentary Molly vs the Machines earlier this year, Meta issued a statement noting that its thoughts remain with Molly’s friends and family. The corporation emphasized that it has introduced safety measures since her death, including defaulting all teenagers under the age of 18 into private accounts, and restricting who can message them and what content appears in their feeds.
