Id Software Reaffirms Studio Autonomy

After 35 years in the industry, the studio insists it retains the staffing levels required to uphold its history of technical innovation as it prepares for QuakeCon this August.

Microsoft Restructuring Hits Four Xbox Studios

The cuts at Id Software are part of a wider contraction across Microsoft’s gaming division, which has impacted four Xbox studios, according to reports from IGN. To quell public concern regarding the studio’s future, Id Software took to its official X account to clarify that its current headcount is comparable to the team size during the development of the 2016 DOOM reboot.

The studio stated that while layoffs touched various teams, its core capacity to build proprietary technology and develop future games remains intact. This public assurance serves as a direct response to speculation that the developer might be relegated to a support-only role within the larger Microsoft Gaming ecosystem.

Founders Weigh In on Economic Realities

John Carmack, a co-founder of Id Software, addressed the news on X. While calling the situation "saddening," he described the current industry climate as intensely competitive. Carmack noted that Microsoft’s stewardship of the brand is under pressure, stating, "games need to succeed, not just be beloved." He added that Id Software may have functioned as a marginal business entity within Microsoft’s broader portfolio, which is heavily supported by the consistent revenue generated by Minecraft.

Fellow co-founder John Romero expressed empathy for the affected employees, highlighting the personal toll of leaving a workplace with decades of professional history. In a statement on X, Romero noted the difficulty of maintaining the DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein legacies, praising the team for the "care, skill and respect" shown in recent releases. He also emphasized the importance of "digital preservation" regarding the studio’s code and assets, noting that his own company, Romero Games, underwent similar challenges a year prior.

The Path Toward QuakeCon

The studio’s immediate focus is the upcoming QuakeCon in August. For now, Id Software’s assertion that it remains equipped to continue its 35-year history suggests the studio intends to maintain its current trajectory in game design and engine production.
