IK Uppsala to dissolve elite women’s football operations after 2026 season
Ten years of top-flight ambition will end when IK Uppsala dissolves its elite women’s football operations at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The Damallsvenskan bottom club announced the decision on Wednesday, citing an unsustainable economic model and escalating costs for running professional football.
Founded a decade ago, the club celebrated promotion to the top flight ahead of the 2025 season. Today, the reality on the pitch matches the ledger: the team sits at the bottom of the Damallsvenskan table with six points after 21 matches, a standing underscored by a recent 9–0 defeat against BK Häcken.
Commercial stagnation and rising operational expenses
Commercial revenues simply failed to grow at the rate required to match rising operational expenses. Rather than stemming from a single missed source of revenue or an isolated financial event, the decision reflects a comprehensive assessment of the organization’s overall financial and administrative conditions, according to the club’s official statement.
The structural squeeze on standalone clubs
That announcement prompted immediate reactions across Swedish football. Expert commentator Hanna Marklund addressed the structural difficulties facing standalone clubs in the top division, SVT Nyheter reported.
Marklund noted that the sport increasingly relies on dual-club structures where women’s teams benefit from the established infrastructure, arenas, training facilities, and commercial backing of major men’s football organizations.
IK Uppsala similarly pointed to these shifting conditions in its announcement, highlighting that newly established competitors enter the league with robust existing organizations and supporter bases developed over long periods.
The final fixtures and the relegation scramble
Time is running out on the pitch. IK Uppsala has five matches remaining in its history, starting with a fixture against Kristianstad on Saturday, Expressen reported.
The club’s impending departure from the league will inevitably reshape the ongoing relegation battle. The team still has to face Hammarby, AIK, Kristianstad, Växjö, and Norrköping, according to SVT Nyheter.
