IKEA and Xbox Launch YXSTABY Gaming Furniture Collection Featuring Controller-Inspired Designs
IKEA and Xbox launched the YXSTABY gaming furniture collection on December 1, 2024, introducing pieces designed around official Xbox wireless controller geometry, v.daum.net reported. The lineup includes a thumbstick stool developed from original 3D design files provided by Xbox device designers, alongside a mobile TV stand and a lounge chair with hidden controller storage.
From Controller to Stool: The YXSTABY Design Process
The collection originated from joint development between IKEA and Xbox designers, who surveyed households where gaming is integrated into daily life. Designers paired up across both companies, blending 25 years of Xbox play-style research with over 80 years of IKEA home furnishing expertise. The centerpiece of the collaboration is the thumbstick stool, which uses the grip texture of an Xbox controller thumbstick to keep users in place. Its rounded base allows the seat to tilt like an actual analog stick when the user shifts their weight. Xbox design director Elliot Hsu noted that the team’s challenge was creating a stool that captured the feel of a thumbstick without building a literal, oversized replica.
Mobile Storage and Living Room Integration
Other products in the collection prioritize practical daily utility. IKEA introduced its first wheeled TV stand in black and white finishes, featuring rear storage space to transport consoles, controllers, and cables between rooms. A matching side table includes wheels alongside dedicated storage and charging slots for controllers. The lounge chair features a hidden pocket underneath the seat designed specifically to stow a controller. IKEA product developer Philip Dile stated that the partnership aimed to treat gaming spaces with the same care and comfort as any other daily activity. Xbox device design chief Carl Ledbetter added that translating elements like the D-pad and thumbsticks into functional furniture helps integrate gaming gear naturally into domestic spaces.
Global Release Schedule and Regional Pricing
The YXSTABY collection became available on December 1 in select international markets, including the United Kingdom and Canada, though IKEA noted that exact availability varies by region. In the United States, in-store sales began on December 1, while online availability launched on November 30. Local release dates and pricing for other regions remain unconfirmed by the companies.
