Indonesian Ministers Visit IKN, Highlight Progress and Sustainability Efforts

Jakarta, Indonesia – Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, General TNI (Ret.) Djamari Chaniago, and Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, recently visited Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara (IKN), to observe development progress and emphasize the region’s commitment to sustainability. The visits, occurring on March 3rd and February 28th, 2026, respectively, showcased ongoing efforts in reforestation, community engagement, and infrastructure development.

Forestry Minister Highlights Reforestation Success

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni visited IKN on February 28, 2026, focusing on forest and land rehabilitation (RHL) areas and Bhineka Tunggal Ika Plaza. He also oversaw the handover of Social Forestry Decrees to four Forest Farmer Groups in East Kalimantan. The Minister inspected 1,805 hectares of land previously dominated by eucalyptus monoculture, now being transformed into tropical rainforests through the planting of diverse, native species like meranti, gaharu, lime, medang, nyamplung, and nyatoh.

According to a press release from the IKN Authority, Raja Juli noted significant vegetation growth and increased biodiversity, with the return of bird populations to the rehabilitated areas. He stated, “Forests as a natural resource are maximized for the welfare of the community…We just saw the RHL location two years ago, but now the trees are tall enough to replace monoculture plants. It is reported that there are also birds because the vegetation is starting to vary to support IKN becoming a forest city.”

The handover of Social Forestry Decrees aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to ensure local communities have legal access, economic benefits, and an active role in sustainable forest management.

Coordinating Minister Praises IKN Development

On March 3, 2026, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago toured IKN to assess the development of the archipelago region as the future center of Indonesia’s government. He expressed his appreciation for the significant progress made, stating, “I feel lucky and proud to be here to witness the City of the Archipelago being guarded and accompanied by the Governor and the Head of the IKN Authority…This is a place that will be proud of all of us.”

Accompanied by Head of the IKN Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono, and Governor of East Kalimantan, Rudy Mas’ud, Minister Chaniago inspected strategic infrastructure, including the State Palace and Garuda Palace areas, to assess the readiness of government facilities. He also participated in midday prayers at the IKN State Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.

IKN Ready for Gradual Government Transition

Minister Chaniago believes IKN is becoming increasingly prepared to accommodate the transfer of government ministries. He noted the availability of essential infrastructure, including residences, hospitals, schools, markets, and an airport, facilitating a smooth transition. “Hopefully in the near future…some of their personnel will be able to enter and be present here. Because the facilities already exist…So, it is remarkably easy to reach,” he said.

The visits by both ministers underscore the Indonesian government’s commitment to developing IKN as a modern, sustainable, and inclusive government center.
