Federal Investigators Target Representative Ilhan Omar in Immigration and Financial Probe

Representative Ilhan Omar has enlisted high-profile Washington attorneys Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz as the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington investigates her immigration history and financial disclosures, the NY Post reported. Federal agents searched the Minnesota Democrat’s home this month under a court order from the Department of Justice, examining records that reference a prior alias, Nur Said Elmi. The defense team, both partners at the boutique law firm Hecker Fink, brings extensive Democratic-aligned legal backgrounds to the unfolding federal inquiry, though neither specializes in immigration law.

High-Profile Legal Pedigrees Join Defense Team

Amy Jeffress became President Joe Biden’s personal attorney in 2025, succeeding longtime confidant Bob Bauer. According to the NY Post, Jeffress previously represented the former president during scrutiny over his use of an autopen to sign presidential pardons and legislation. Her past government and investigative work includes serving as outside counsel for the House January 6 committee and representing former FBI lawyer Lisa Page during controversies surrounding text messages exchanged ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Jeffress and her co-counsel lack specific expertise in immigration law, bringing a focus that has sparked questions regarding whether Omar’s primary legal exposure stems from her immigration status or the financial activities of her husband.

Joshua Matz, the second partner on Omar’s defense team, represented House Democrats during both of Donald Trump’s impeachment trials and served on the legal team for the House January 6 committee. Matz also represented Brown University, New York University, and Columbia University in legal challenges against Trump administration executive orders targeting affirmative action and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, as reported by the NY Post.

Rep. Omar says she hasn’t talked to federal agents since raid at her home

Federal Probe Examines Omar's Finances and Immigration History

The federal probe encompasses both Omar’s immigration history and revisions to her financial disclosure forms. Questions regarding her finances have persisted in Congress even after she amended her latest filings. Omar stated in an interview that she lives paycheck to paycheck despite her $174,000 congressional salary, and she asserted that federal agents denied her phone access to her attorney for an hour during the home raid. Court documents tied to the search reference her prior alias, Nur Said Elmi, drawing investigative attention to allegations originating on a Somali blog that her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, is her brother.

On the legal front, Jeffress and Matz sent a seven-page letter to the Department of Justice last Friday demanding the return of Omar’s passport, electronic devices, and other seized property. A review of Omar’s campaign filings shows no direct payments made to the firm or the attorneys as of the October 15 filing deadline. Meanwhile, Omar released a video appeal asking supporters for contributions of $5, $10, or $20 to fund her defense, describing the situation as a challenging and expensive period.

Donald Trump Demands Congressional Resignation

Donald Trump has maintained public pressure on the lawmaker, calling for her immediate resignation on Thursday night. Trump asserted that Omar was sworn into office under a name different from her own, echoing the administration’s focus on her background. The Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington have not set a public timeline for the conclusion of the ongoing investigation into her immigration history and financial documents.
