Imojean Smith Harvey: A Life Dedicated to Education and Community

Imojean Smith Harvey, a lifelong educator and active community member, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 89. Her dedication to teaching and service left a lasting impact on generations of students and friends.

Early Life and Education

Born on April 28, 1936, in Sicily Island, Louisiana, Imojean was the daughter of William Ablert and Mary Vondell (Cooper) Smith. She pursued her education diligently, earning a diploma from Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She continued her studies at Southeastern University in Hammond, Louisiana, where she obtained a teaching degree, and later completed a Master’s degree in Guidance at Mississippi College.

A 40-Year Teaching Career

For four decades, Imojean Smith Harvey dedicated herself to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She taught at Central Elementary, Sharon Hills Elementary, Parkview Baptist, and Cornerstone Academy, fostering a love of learning in countless children.

Community Involvement and Faith

Beyond her professional life, Imojean was an active member of both Greenwell Springs Baptist and Florida Boulevard Baptist Churches, demonstrating her strong faith and commitment to community service.

Remembering Imojean

Imojean is survived by her daughter, Tara Jean Harvey, nieces Lahri Gentry and Cristi Williams, and great-niece Hayley Williams. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Harrison Harvey, and her parents, Bill and Vondell Smith, as well as her sister, Billie Dixon.

Celebration of Life and Memorial Donations

A Celebration of Imojean’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m. At the City Café, located at 4710 O’Neal Ln, #113, Baton Rouge, LA 70817. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to make memorial donations to The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association (LRTA) at 9412 Common St, Ste 5, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
