Specialists at Unidad Médica de Atención Ambulatoria (UMAA) No. 161 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) restored functional vision to a patient who lived with congenital cataracts for 23 years, according to an official IMSS press release issued on August 5, 2026. The patient, identified as Alin, underwent small-incision cataract surgery paired with an intraocular graduated lens implant to correct lifelong visual limitations that began at birth.

Clinical Background and Surgical Procedure

Congenital cataracts impair vision by causing the natural lens of the eye, known as the crystalline lens, to lose transparency, which blocks light from reaching the retina properly. While cataracts are commonly associated with aging populations, they can also develop congenitally or stem from trauma, diabetes, or long-term medication use, according to Dr. Román Ismael Martínez Cruz, an ophthalmologic surgeon at UMAA No. 161 who performed the operation. Dr. Martínez Cruz noted that cataracts remain the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide, and that timely detection combined with minimally invasive surgery can significantly restore sight and everyday functionality.

For Alin, the condition meant enduring severe sunlight sensitivity and reading difficulties from childhood that impacted daily life. Following years of medical follow-up as an IMSS beneficiary, clinical evaluations confirmed she was a candidate for the surgical intervention. The operation successfully removed the opaque lens tissue and replaced it with a graduated intraocular lens, enabling her to process visual information clearly for the first time.

Public Healthcare Impact and Economic Context

The successful intervention highlights the role of specialized outpatient facilities within the public health infrastructure. UMAA No. 161 functions as an institutional reference point for ophthalmological care, providing advanced treatments to insured members. In the private healthcare sector, comparable cataract surgeries utilizing graduated intraocular lenses typically range in cost from 40 y 70 mil pesos, placing a heavy financial burden on families seeking vision restoration outside public institutions.

Following the procedure, Alin expressed gratitude toward the medical and nursing teams at IMSS, describing the recovery of her sight as a life-transforming event. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of the Institute to deliver comprehensive ophthalmological care that restores independence and long-term well-being to patients across the country.
