India Blocks Oscar-Nominated Film ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ Amid Diplomatic Concerns

The Indian government, through the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), has blocked the theatrical release of Kaouther Ben Hania’s Oscar-nominated documentary-drama, The Voice of Hind Rajab, citing concerns over potential strain on India-Israel relations. The film was originally scheduled for release on March 6, 2026, ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards on March 16.

The Story Behind the Film

The Voice of Hind Rajab is based on the true story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-vintage Palestinian girl who was tragically killed during an Israeli military operation in Gaza in January 2024. The film centers around audio recordings of Hind’s desperate emergency call to the Palestinian Red Crescent, pleading for help as she was trapped in a car surrounded by gunfire. Two paramedics attempting to rescue her were similarly reportedly killed in the attack.

CBFC’s Reasoning and Distributor’s Response

Manoj Nandwana, head of Jai Viratra Entertainment, the film’s Indian distributor, revealed that the CBFC refused certification, stating the film was “very sensitive.” According to Nandwana, a CBFC member explicitly stated that releasing the film could “affect the India-Israel relationship.” Variety reports that Nandwana contested this reasoning, arguing that the India-Israel relationship is strong enough to withstand a film’s portrayal of the conflict. He also pointed out that the film had already been released in several countries with close ties to Israel, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. The Indian Express also reported on this exchange.

Political Fallout and Criticism

The decision to block the film has sparked criticism within India. Shashi Tharoor, a member of the Indian National Congress, denounced the move as “an act of shame for a democratic country,” arguing that film screenings should reflect freedom of expression and not be dictated by foreign relations. The Indian Express detailed Tharoor’s response on social media.

Film’s Reception and Current Status

Despite the controversy, The Voice of Hind Rajab has garnered critical acclaim, receiving a 23-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 2026 Oscars. The Quint highlights the film’s international recognition. The distributor is currently pursuing a review of the CBFC’s decision, but the outcome remains uncertain. The Hindu reports that the film has been referred to a Revising Committee within the CBFC.
