India Direct Selling Industry Growth Reaches Rs 23,522 Crore
As per a study by the Association of Direct Selling Entities of India (ADSEI) conducted alongside research partner Kantar and highlighted by thehindubusinessline.com, India’s direct-selling market climbed to Rs 23,522 crore for the financial year concluded in March 2025, marking a compound annual growth rate of 7 per cent. The sector supports 91 lakh active direct sellers, with women accounting for 47 per cent of that total, providing self-employment and supplementary income across the country.
Employment Generation and Women Participation in Direct Selling
Women account for nearly 43 lakh of the industry’s active sellers, according to the report. Because there are no formal educational prerequisites, starting capital requirements are relatively minimal, and schedules are flexible, direct selling remains readily available to women throughout semi-urban and rural regions, giving them a way to generate their own income. ADSEI President Sanjeev Kumar stated that the industry builds on the spirit of entrepreneurship to provide livelihoods for more than 91 lakh people, nearly half of them women. ADSEI patron Gautam Bali noted that the sector creates opportunities for people to establish businesses and contribute to household finances, though retaining sellers remains a challenge.
Sales Breakdown and Regional Market Share
Accounting for over 86 per cent of total sector sales, wellness, personal care, and cosmetics demonstrate how heavily the market relies on everyday consumer goods used by households. Regionally, Northern India is the largest market with a 26.8 per cent share, followed by Western India at 24.5 per cent. India currently ranks 11th among the world’s 15 largest direct-selling markets as the industry expands its reach through entrepreneurship, training, and regulatory compliance.
Regulatory Compliance and Seller Demographics
The Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021, were highlighted in the findings as a pivotal measure toward structuring the sector and setting down more defined guidelines for business operations. Participants in the survey indicated an optimistic view of current regulations and voiced hopes that the market will continue expanding over the next two years. About 69 per cent of active direct sellers are aged between 25 and 44, while more than 32 per cent reported consistent month-on-month income. Training and onboarding programmes help participants develop sales, communication, financial literacy, and small-business management skills.
