Salem ER Doctor Receives Life-Saving Heart Transplant During Snowstorm
A longtime emergency room physician in Salem, Indiana, Dr. Stephen Kemker, is recovering after receiving a life-saving heart transplant in December amidst challenging winter weather conditions. Dr. Kemker, who has dedicated over 30 years to patient care at Ascension St. Vincent in Salem, found himself on the receiving end of medical intervention when diagnosed with advanced heart failure.
Facing a Critical Diagnosis
Dr. Kemker was diagnosed with advanced heart failure linked to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle. According to Dr. Kemker, “It’s like stepping off a cliff. The heart can no longer compensate.” Physicians determined a heart transplant offered the best chance for his survival.
A Race Against Time
When a donor heart became available in December, a snowstorm threatened to delay the critical surgery. The transplant team faced a race against time to transport the organ safely to Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. Snowplows were deployed to clear a path for the team at the airport, ensuring the heart arrived in time for the procedure.
Successful Transplant and Recovery
Dr. Kathleen Morris, Dr. Kemker’s advanced heart failure cardiologist, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “We knew that he needed the heart and that the time was critical. So we did whatever we could within our power to get the heart here. Fortunately, it was successful,” she said. After weeks of recovery, Dr. Kemker was discharged home in January and is continuing to regain his strength.
From Doctor to Patient
Dr. Kemker acknowledged the difficulty of transitioning from being the caregiver to the patient. “I had to accept the fact that this was a little bit beyond me, so I needed their advice and their care and they did an excellent job,” he stated.
A Community Physician and Family Support
Dr. Kemker and his wife, Dr. Caitlin Kemker, a family medicine physician, have served the Salem community since 1993. Dr. Caitlin Kemker expressed deep gratitude for the organ donor and the impact of their selfless act. “There’s no gratitude that you can give for that. And he’s here. Somebody did a wonderful thing for several people that night,” she said. “I hope someday we can thank them in person.”
Encouraging Organ Donation
Dr. Kemker hopes that by sharing his story, he can inspire others to consider becoming organ donors. His doctors report that his recovery is progressing positively.
