The Helmerich Center for American Research is currently featuring “Indigenous Independence: America at 250,” an exhibition highlighting rare books, manuscripts, and art from the Gilcrease collection. The display runs through December 17, offering a distinct perspective on the American Revolution as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.

Rather than framing the revolution solely as a break with Great Britain, the exhibition illustrates a long history of struggle between American colonists and Native nations.
Exhibition Artifacts and Historical Scope
Visitors to the Helmerich Center can view several foundational historical items, including copies of treaties established between Indigenous nations and Great Britain. The gallery also features peace medals that marked key diplomatic events, alongside historic maps referencing the Native peoples and places that defined the era.
Programming for the America 250 exhibition is supported by Donald J. and Chris Hoose, Donald M. and Patricia M. Hardin, and the Leuschen Endowment for Research and Education.
Visitor Information and Access
The exhibition is open to the public from June 15 through December 17, with closures scheduled for September 7, November 26, and November 27. The Helmerich Center operates Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guided tours available at 2 p.m. on Thursdays.
