Indonesia Climbs FIFA Ranking as Malaysia Suffers Setback
Jakarta – Indonesia’s national football team has seen a positive shift in the latest FIFA rankings, climbing one position to 121st place. This advancement comes as Malaysia experiences a significant drop, falling 14 places due to recent sanctions.
According to the latest rankings released by FIFA on Monday, March 23, 2026, Indonesia now sits at 121st, improving from its previous position of 122nd. Malaysia, impacted by the fallout from a naturalization controversy, has plummeted to 135th place with 1095.90 points. Indonesia currently holds 1144.73 points.
Sanctions Impact Malaysia’s Ranking
The decline for Malaysia follows sanctions imposed by FIFA related to allegations of falsified documents concerning foreign players. Malaysia’s matches against Nepal and Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualification were both forfeited with a scoreline of 0-3 South China Morning Post.
Vietnam Benefits from Malaysia’s Forfeiture
Vietnam also benefited from the altered results, gaining five spots to reach 103rd position with 1213.62 points. This is due to the 0-4 defeat to Malaysia being changed to a 3-0 win for Vietnam VnExpress.
Upcoming Matches Could Further Shift Rankings
The FIFA rankings are dynamic and will continue to evolve with upcoming matches. The Indonesian national team is scheduled to play two FIFA Series matches on March 27th and 30th against Saint Kitts and Nevis and Bulgaria/Solomon Islands, respectively.
