Indonesia Launches TORASERA to Boost Cooperative Economy and Local Products
Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan – Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives, Ferry Juliantono, inaugurated the Toko Rakyat Serba Ada (TORASERA) – People’s Store – at the Abdusalam Islamic Boarding School in Kubu Raya Regency on Monday, February 9, 2026. This initiative aims to strengthen public access to essential goods and promote the growth of community-based cooperative enterprises, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision for a cooperative-driven national economy Kompas.
A Model for National Expansion
TORASERA is intended to serve as a national model for replicating similar initiatives across Indonesia. The government is targeting the establishment of 83,000 Merah Putih Village and Urban Cooperatives nationwide ObserverID. The primary challenge identified by Minister Juliantono is ensuring these cooperatives operate sustainably and profitably.
Supporting Local Economies and Farmers
Beyond providing essential goods, TORASERA will function as an offtaker for products from local farmers, fishermen, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This will shorten supply chains and bolster the local economy Detik. The store will distribute necessities like cooking oil, LPG, and other daily essentials.
Collaboration with Islamic Boarding Schools
The Abdusalam Islamic Boarding School cooperative will act as a partner and mentor, assisting village cooperatives in strengthening their management, business models, and overall operations. This collaboration is a key component of building a robust and sustainable cooperative ecosystem ObserverID.
Addressing Economic Challenges
TORASERA aims to address economic challenges faced by rural communities, including high prices for basic goods, lengthy distribution chains, and the prevalence of illegal lending. By empowering communities through cooperatives, the initiative seeks to foster active economic participation rather than passive reliance on aid ObserverID.
Potential Reach and Future Development
The TORASERA in Kubu Raya is projected to reach approximately 100 Merah Putih Village and Urban Cooperatives within the region IDN Times. A feasibility study will be conducted to refine the business model and operational guidelines for replication in other districts and cities across Indonesia.
