Three Indonesian UN Peacekeepers Killed in Southern Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is investigating the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers who were killed in separate incidents in southern Lebanon within a 24-hour window. The fatalities occurred amidst a nearly month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah, highlighting the extreme risks faced by UN personnel operating in the region.

Timeline of the Fatalities

The casualties occurred across two distinct events between March 29 and March 30, 2026:

• March 29, 2026: A projectile exploded at a UNIFIL position near the village of Adchit Al Qusayr. The attack killed one Indonesian peacekeeper and left another seriously injured.
• March 30, 2026: An explosion struck a UNIFIL logistics convoy near the Bani Haiyyan municipality, resulting in the deaths of two additional Indonesian peacekeepers. Two other personnel were wounded in this incident, one of whom sustained severe injuries.

UNIFIL has launched investigations into both incidents. Although the organization initially described the projectiles as being of “unknown origin,” a UN security source told Al Jazeera that fire from an Israeli tank was responsible for the attack that killed the first soldier.

The Fallen Peacekeepers

The Indonesian government has officially received the bodies of the three soldiers. The victims have been identified as:

• Farizal Rhomadhon, 28: Killed on March 29 following a projectile explosion.
• Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, 33: Killed on March 30 during the convoy explosion.
• Muhammad Nur Ichwan, 26: Killed on March 30 during the convoy explosion.

The coffins arrived in Indonesia on Saturday, April 4, where they were honored in a ceremony attended by President Prabowo Subianto.

International and Diplomatic Reactions

The deaths have triggered sharp condemnation from both the international community and the Indonesian government.

The United Nations: Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attacks, stating that “no one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace.” He emphasized that attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, noting that such actions may amount to war crimes. The UN Security Council also issued a press statement expressing its condemnation of the incidents.

The Indonesian Government: Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for a thorough UN investigation into the deaths. Speaking at the airport during the arrival of the fallen soldiers, Sugiono asserted that “there must be a security guarantee for peacekeeping soldiers,” stressing that such incidents should not occur during a peacekeeping mission.

The Strategic Context of UNIFIL

UNIFIL operates under the mandate of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which was designed to end hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah nearly two decades ago. Yet, the current escalation in the Middle East has placed these “blue helmets” in the direct line of fire.
