Recent years have seen one of Asia’s largest wealth transfers as the four descendants of deceased Indonesian billionaire Michael Bambang Hartono each received family holding company shares valued at a minimum of US$2.93 billion. According to government filings cited by The Edge Malaysia, the inheritance follows the death of Michael Bambang Hartono in March at the age of 86.
Family Holding Structure and Bank Central Asia Stake
The massive wealth transfer was executed through PT Dwimuria Investama Andalan, the family’s holding company. Michael Bambang Hartono and his brother Robert Budi Hartono previously owned just over half of Bank Central Asia, Indonesia’s largest lender, alongside other business interests through the firm. Government filings show that Michael’s 49% stake in Dwimuria has been split equally among his four heirs, granting each child an identical equity slice.
Based on Dwimuria’s ownership of Bank Central Asia alone, Michael’s stake in the holding company was valued at at least US$11.7 billion as of August 11, according to The Edge Malaysia. Beyond banking, the children hold interests in a diverse business empire spanning banking, shopping malls, and plantations. The family also owns PT Djarum, which operates as one of Indonesia’s largest producers of clove-scented cigarettes, commonly known as kretek.
The Hartono family held a combined net worth of US$28.6 billion as of August 11, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making them Indonesia’s richest family. A family representative declined to comment on the inheritance filing. The fortune originated when the brothers expanded a cigarette business inherited from their father before moving into finance.
Comparison with Regional Wealth Transfers
Other generational wealth handovers across the area are eclipsed by the Hartono family transition, with reporting from The Edge Malaysia indicating that the Hartono distribution surpasses the roughly US$10 billion estate left by Singaporean United Overseas Bank Ltd. late patriarch Wee Cho Yaw.

Leadership Transition at PT Djarum
Victor Hartono, the eldest son of Robert Budi Hartono, has officially succeeded his father to become the chief executive officer of PT Djarum. He previously served as the company’s chief operating officer, stepping into the top executive role as the broader family empire transitions control to the younger generation.
