Belgian Community Mourns Six-Year-Old Inez Aerts After Battle with Cancer
Zonhoven, Belgium – The community of Zonhoven is in mourning following the death of six-year-old Inez Aerts, who passed away in Barcelona on March 22, 2026, after complications following surgery. Inez had been bravely battling neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, since December 2023.
Inez’s Battle with Neuroblastoma
Inez underwent a major operation in Barcelona in February, which successfully removed the cancer from her abdomen. Her mother had recently shared positive news, stating that the cancer in her stomach had been completely removed, with plans to address the spread to her lungs once Inez regained strength. Community Response and Remembrance
The news of Inez’s passing has deeply affected the community of Zonhoven. Her primary school, De Zonnewijzer, has established a “silence class” where students and teachers can gather to remember her. Family’s Statement
Inez’s parents shared a heartbreaking statement, saying, “Our hearts are forever broken. But one thing is certain. Forever with four. Thank you, Inez. Thank you for everything. Repatriation to Belgium
