Virus with consequences

Influenza A is dangerous due to its potential complications, including viral and bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, otitis media, sinusitis, exacerbation of chronic diseases, and respiratory failure. The cardiovascular system can also be affected, according to Marina Dolgushkina, a methodologist at the Centre for Public Health and Medical Prevention of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory.

“The risk group traditionally includes young children, people over 65 years of age, pregnant women, patients with chronic diseases, and people with weakened immune systems. for them, influenza A can pose a real threat to life, so prevention and early seeking of medical help are of fundamental importance,” said Marina dolgushkina.

Unlike the common cold, Influenza A begins acutely and quickly. A person can often pinpoint the exact time they started feeling unwell. Characteristic symptoms include a sharp increase in temperature to 38-40 °C, severe weakness, aching muscles and joints, headache (especially in the eyes and forehead), chills, a dry cough, and possible nausea and vomiting.

“Influenza A has a short incubation period – from 1 to 4 days, averaging about 2 days. A person can be contagious even before symptoms appear,” said Marina Dolgushkina. “There are manny cases where the disease is carried on the legs, meaning one sick employee or child can trigger an outbreak in a kindergarten group, classroom, or office. Maximum infectiousness occurs within the frist 3-4 days after symptoms begin, explaining the rapid spread in groups.”

Not all remedies are good

Antibiotics are ineffective against influenza A; they are only used for confirmed bacterial complications and as prescribed by a doctor, according to the doctor.

“The first step when experiencing a high temperature, severe weakness, and significant body pain is to stay home, seek medical advice, and strictly follow a specialist’s recommendations.Self-medication shoudl be avoided,” said Marina Dolgushkina.

Vaccination is the most effective and scientifically proven method of prevention, reducing the risk of severe illness and protecting against dangerous complications. even if a vaccinated person contracts the flu,the illness is typically milder,” explained Marina Dolgushkina.

During periods of increased incidence, it is also recommended to avoid contact with sick individuals.
