Harbour Porpoise Euthanized After Stranding on Ameland Island
A juvenile female harbour porpoise that stranded on Ameland, an island in the Netherlands, was euthanized after being found in poor condition, according to reports from local animal welfare organizations. The decision was made to prevent further suffering for the animal.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the Ameland animal ambulance responding to the scene. With assistance from the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM), the porpoise was transported to the mainland for examination at a dolphin sanctuary in Anna Paulowna.
Upon arrival, veterinarians determined the porpoise was severely emaciated and had sustained injuries under its left eye. Euthanasia was subsequently performed.
This stranding is part of a recent pattern of porpoise strandings along the Dutch coast. SOS Dolfijn is currently caring for five other porpoises as reported on LinkedIn.
The animal ambulance expressed gratitude to all those involved in the rescue efforts.
