Instagram Tests Reels-First Layout to Lift Video Consumption
Instagram is testing a new user interface that would let users choose to open to their Reels feed instead of the current post feed experience, Social Media Today reported. App researcher Radu Oncescu spotted the alternative layout, which places Stories at the top of the home screen while letting users swipe across to access the standard feed.
Meta is deploying the feature as an optional setting rather than a forced default. Users can revert to the regular feed whenever they want, a design choice intended to ease the transition without alienating the platform’s user base.
Shifting Engagement Metrics Behind the Test
The interface change follows years of platform adjustments designed to center short-form video. More than 50% of user time on Instagram is now spent watching Reels, according to company data. All of the platform's recent engagement gains stem directly from video consumption, making a video-first opening screen a logical next step for the product.
Instagram previously tested a similar format in India, where the Stories bar remained visible above the primary Reels feed and a top-right icon provided access to the traditional grid.
Meta keeps Reels-first view optional during testing
Because shifting away from the traditional feed risks provoking user backlash, Meta is keeping the feature optional during the initial testing phase. However, if adoption rates climb and overall video engagement rises during the test, Instagram is expected to consider making the Reels-first view the standard experience for all users.
How users access posts in Reels layout
How do users access their traditional post feed in the test layout?
Users can view the traditional grid by swiping across from the Reels screen or by tapping the designated icon located at the top right of the application interface.
Where has Instagram previously tested a Reels-first interface?
Instagram tested an identical format in India last year, keeping the Stories bar positioned above the main Reels feed while offering a manual toggle for the traditional grid.
Why is Instagram prioritizing Reels over static posts?
The company is focusing on short-form video because users now spend more than half of their total in-app time watching Reels, and video consumption drives all current platform engagement growth.
