Intel Driver Update Dramatically Reduces Game Load Times with Microsoft’s Shader Distribution Service
Intel has released a new graphics driver, version 32.0.101.8626 WHQL Game On, that fully supports Microsoft’s Graphics Shader Distribution Service, resulting in significant reductions in game load times. This makes Intel the first company to implement support for the new Microsoft feature.
The Problem: Shader Compilation and Long Load Times
Traditionally, when a player launches a game for the first time, the graphics card needs to compile shaders – small programs that determine how objects in the game look. This process can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the game and the hardware. Microsoft’s Graphics Shader Distribution Service aims to solve this by pre-compiling shaders and distributing them to players, reducing load times.
Intel’s Implementation and Performance Gains
The new Intel driver enables Arc B-series GPUs to take advantage of these pre-compiled shaders. According to Intel’s testing, the results are substantial. God of War Ragnarök, released on PC in September 2024 [1], saw its loading time improved by over 20 times.
Other games also experienced significant improvements:
- Cyberpunk 2077: Approximately 30% faster loading
- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered: Approximately 30% faster loading
- Black Myth: Wukong: More than twice as fast loading
- NBA 2K26: More than twice as fast loading
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 7: Loading time reduced to one-third
Current Game Support
As of the driver’s release, support is limited to 13 games. Though, Intel expects both driver support and game compatibility to expand in the future.
