Proyecto Hécate: A Chilean Coral Celebration of Women’s Voices

Proyecto Hécate, an innovative coral cantata celebrating the strength and diversity of women, has become a significant cultural event in Chile. Founded under the direction of cantautora Veronica Soffia, the project has evolved from its beginnings in March 2023 into a multifaceted artistic endeavor with performances and workshops across the country.

Origins and Artistic Vision

The core of Proyecto Hécate lies in its exploration of the female experience through music. As described by Francisca Méndez, a member of the ensemble, Hécate is “more than a choir; it’s a space of personal and collective exploration, born from our stories as women.” Each song within the cantata reflects the individual journeys of the performers, collectively weaving a universal narrative. The project’s name draws inspiration from Hécate, a Greek goddess symbolizing duality and feminine wisdom, representing the maiden, mother, and crone archetypes.

Musical Diversity and Performance

The cantata distinguishes itself through its eclectic musical repertoire, blending genres such as Colombian cumbia, Bulgarian choral traditions, ballads, and Latin American folklore. This fusion creates a dynamic and emotionally resonant experience for audiences. The performance features 20 women, both singers and instrumentalists, and is designed to appeal to a broad audience.

Current Activities and Locations

Currently, Veronica Soffia leads two women’s choirs – Hécate Santiago and Hécate Puerto Varas – as well as a creative choir in Frutillar that focuses on improvisation and collective creation [Teatro del Lago]. A recent concert took place on March 9, 2024, at Centro de Arte Molino Machmar in Puerto Varas [Welcu]. The project also participated in the Commemoration of International Women’s Day in Puerto Varas on March 8, 2026, showcasing initiatives led by women in the community [Instagram].

Recent Performance at Teatro del Lago

On Sunday, Proyecto Hécate presented the cantata at the Teatro del Lago in Frutillar at 8:30 PM. The event aimed to foster emotional connection and encourage reflection on identity. Regional authorities were also in attendance, highlighting the project’s contribution to raising awareness about gender issues and domestic violence [Patagonia Radio].

Looking Ahead

Proyecto Hécate continues to evolve as a vibrant space for female artistic expression and community engagement in Chile. Through its unique blend of musical styles and its commitment to exploring the complexities of the female experience, the project promises to remain a compelling force in the Chilean cultural landscape.
