Apple’s latest affordable iPhone, the iPhone 17e, launched this week with a starting price of $599, offering several upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. This comparison examines the key differences between the two models to help you decide if upgrading is worthwhile.
Display and Build Quality
Both the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e share identical dimensions: 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches and both feature a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2,532×1,170 pixels (460 ppi). Peak brightness is 1,200 nits for HDR content and 800 nits typical max brightness, ensuring a crisp and vibrant viewing experience on both devices. The design, including the button layout and aluminum frame, remains largely unchanged.
Still, Apple has improved the durability of the iPhone 17e. It utilizes Ceramic Shield 2 for the front glass, offering three times the scratch resistance compared to the Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 16e. Both phones are IP68 rated for water resistance, surviving submersion up to 6 meters for 30 minutes.
The iPhone 17e is slightly heavier at 5.96 ounces compared to the iPhone 16e’s 5.88 ounces, likely due to the durability enhancements. Color options for the iPhone 17e include Black, White, and a latest light Pink, adding a fresh aesthetic choice.
Performance and Storage
The iPhone 17e boasts the A19 chip, Apple’s latest A-series processor, even though the 17e version has one fewer GPU core than its higher-end counterparts. This chip delivers impressive performance for a budget-friendly iPhone. While users upgrading from an iPhone 16e may not notice significant day-to-day speed improvements, those coming from older models like the iPhone 8, X, XR, XS, or 11 will experience a substantial performance leap.
A significant upgrade is the base storage, which has been doubled to 256GB on the iPhone 17e, with Apple discontinuing the 128GB option. Importantly, this storage increase hasn’t resulted in a price hike.

A major omission in the iPhone 16e was the lack of MagSafe compatibility. Apple has addressed this in the iPhone 17e, fully embracing the MagSafe ecosystem. The iPhone 17e retains some of the compromises found in the iPhone 16e. It continues to feature a single-lens rear camera without the Telephoto or Ultra Wide lens options found in the more expensive iPhone 17 models. It also lacks the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate available on the higher-end iPhone 17 lineup, and maintains the traditional notch on the display.
Is the Upgrade Worth It?
If you can live without a multiple-camera system and don’t require the smoother scrolling of ProMotion, the iPhone 17e presents an excellent value. Starting at $599, it’s $200 cheaper than the standard iPhone 17. The addition of MagSafe, the upgraded A19 chip, and the doubled base storage create it a compelling option for those looking to upgrade from older iPhone models or enter the Apple ecosystem.
