Apple’s Affordable Push: From iPhone SE to MacBook Neo

The recent launch of the $599 MacBook Neo – which has helped Apple break Mac sales records, according to Tim Cook – has challenged the perception that Apple focuses solely on premium products. Although, this isn’t a new strategy. Steve Jobs consistently argued that Apple aimed to make premium products accessible to a wider audience, often offering devices at competitive prices.

The iPhone SE: A Precedent for Accessibility

Before the MacBook Neo demonstrated Apple’s ability to combine quality with affordability, the iPhone SE was a key example. Introduced on March 21, 2016, the original iPhone SE signaled Apple’s return to more accessible pricing.

Today’s standard iPhone 17 starts at $799, with entry-level models consistently around this price point. However, the original iPhone was initially priced at $499 for 4GB of storage, quickly dropping to $399 for the 8GB model. The iPhone 3G followed at $199 with a two-year cell plan, a price point that became standard until the iPhone 7, which debuted at $649.

The iPhone SE launched at $399, offering a compelling alternative to the iPhone 6s, which required a potentially costly two-year cell plan.

Smaller Size, Significant Impact

The iPhone SE likewise addressed a growing consumer need: smaller phones. As iPhones grew in size, the SE provided a compact option. Apple emphasized this simplicity, with Greg Joswiak stating at the launch, “While the vast majority of our customers prefer larger display iPhones, we’re here today to talk about a smaller iPhone.” He added that some customers “simply love smaller phones” and that it was often their “first iPhone.”

MacBook Neo: A Gateway to macOS

Tim Cook recently stated that the Mac had its “best launch week ever for first-time Mac customers,” a clear indication of the MacBook Neo’s success. Like the iPhone SE served as an entry point to iOS, the MacBook Neo is positioned as a gateway to macOS.

Apple emphasized the iPhone SE’s power, calling it “the most powerful phone with a four-inch display.” Similarly, the MacBook Neo offers a compelling experience at a lower price point.

Different Approaches to Affordability

While both the iPhone SE and the MacBook Neo aim for affordability, they achieve it differently. The iPhone SE maintained high performance within a smaller form factor, using the same A9 chip as the iPhone 6s and even offering improved battery life. The MacBook Neo, however, utilizes an A18 Pro chip designed for mobile devices, rather than the desktop-class M-series chips, and features compromises like a non-backlit keyboard and limited storage options.

The iPhone SE reduced costs primarily through its physical design, while the MacBook Neo achieves affordability through component choices and feature reductions.

The Future of Affordable Apple Products

Apple’s renewed focus on affordability is evident in the iPhone 17e, which has succeeded the SE line, with Apple seemingly planning yearly releases. This suggests sustained demand for more accessible iPhones.

However, the iPhone 17e isn’t a direct successor to the original iPhone SE’s compact design. Apple has discontinued its “mini” iPhone range, with the iPhone 13 mini being the last of its kind.

Despite this shift, the legacy of the iPhone SE remains significant. The iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo represent a commitment to affordability that builds upon the foundation laid by the iPhone SE. Combined, these devices can be acquired for around $1,200, a price point that would have seemed improbable recently.

With Apple’s renewed dedication to affordable pricing, the iPhone SE’s impact continues to be felt today.
