CIA Arms Kurdish Forces in Iran Amidst Escalating Tensions

The United States is actively supporting Iranian Kurdish groups with arms and resources, aiming to foment an uprising within Iran as the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran intensifies. This support, confirmed by Kurdish and U.S. Officials, comes as Iranian forces increase attacks on Kurdish groups within Iraq.

Escalating Attacks on Kurdish Camps

Camps belonging to groups like the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) have become frequent targets of Iranian drone and ballistic missile strikes following revelations of the CIA’s support. Amanj Zibaee, a KDPI leader, showed reporters the site of a recent strike near the camp’s medical facility, emphasizing the absence of military forces at the location prior to the attacks.1

Coalition Formation and Calls for Support

The KDPI is part of a coalition of six Iranian Kurdish groups that formed an alliance shortly before the U.S. And Israel began military operations against Iran. These groups express a willingness to fight for greater rights and autonomy but are seeking more substantial support from the Trump administration, including a reliable supply of weapons. Mustafa Mawlwdi, the KDPI’s deputy secretary-general, stated that verbal assurances from President Trump are insufficient.1

Iranian Threats and Regional Concerns

Iran has issued renewed threats to target “all facilities of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq” if any Iranian Kurdish fighter crosses the border, raising concerns within the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government.1 Tehran appears determined to demonstrate its vigilance, with further missile and drone strikes reported after a recent visit by reporters to the region.1

Historical Context of U.S. Support for Kurdish Groups

The CIA has a history of collaboration with Kurdish groups, notably in Iraq following the 2003 U.S. Invasion and in Syria against former President Bashar al-Assad, providing funding, arms, and training.1 This current effort reflects a broader strategy by the Trump administration to increase pressure on the Iranian government amidst escalating military operations.3

Kurdish Forces Prepare for Potential Ground Operation

Iranian Kurdish opposition forces are preparing for a potential ground operation in western Iran, anticipating support from the U.S. And Israel. A senior Iranian Kurdish official expressed optimism, stating, “We believe we have a big chance now.”2
