Trump’s Actions Challenge Russia’s Global Influence Amid Iran Conflict

Recent actions by the Trump administration, particularly regarding Iran and other nations, are reshaping the global geopolitical landscape and, unexpectedly, limiting Russia’s influence, according to a report from the New York Times. While initially appearing to benefit from the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now facing a challenge to his established role as a global power broker.

Shifting Dynamics and a Loss of Leverage

Over the past two months, the U.S. Has taken assertive actions, including the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and the implementation of an economic blockade against Cuba. Russia has offered limited assistance in these situations, highlighting the constraints of its partnerships.

Analysts note that Trump’s willingness to directly confront foreign leaders, even within their own countries, has altered the dynamics of international power. Bobo Law, a Russia analyst and former Australian diplomat in Moscow, stated that Trump has effectively become the dominant figure in projecting power and instilling fear, a role previously held by Putin. “Now he’s no longer the baddest guy in town. He’s no longer able to instill fear in the way he hoped. That theme has passed on to Trump. And that makes Putin appear, in some ways, a little pathetic,” Law said.

Limits of the Russia-Iran Partnership

The situation in Iran is particularly significant, given Tehran’s support for Moscow in Ukraine. But, Russia’s ability to assist Iran is limited. Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, explained that Russia could do little to help Iran without risking direct conflict with the United States or Israel. “Given the discovery of intelligence penetration into Iran, Russia, even in tandem with China, could do little to rectify the situation,” Gabuev said.

Unexpected Benefits for Russia

President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed fears that the demand for air defense missiles from Gulf states could reduce the availability of such weapons for Ukraine, and that U.S. Aid could be diverted to the Middle East, as reported by the BBC. Zelensky acknowledged the risk that Ukraine’s allies might become distracted by the new conflict, potentially hindering its defense against Russia.
