Global Economy Faces ‘Major, Major Threat’ From Iran War, IEA Warns

The global economy is facing a significant threat due to escalating tensions and conflict in Iran, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The crisis is comparable to the combined impact of the 1970s oil shocks and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, disrupting vital energy markets and potentially impacting numerous sectors.

IEA Assessment: A Crisis of Unprecedented Scale

Fatih Birol, the IEA’s Executive Director, stated the current energy crisis stemming from the war in Iran represents a “major, major threat” to the global economy. He highlighted that the disruption extends beyond oil, impacting critical supply chains for petrochemicals, fertilizers, sulfur, and helium.

Birol emphasized that the initial severity of the situation was underestimated by world leaders. The damage to energy assets in the Gulf region is substantial, with at least 40 facilities severely or incredibly severely damaged, meaning a swift return to normal supply levels is unlikely even if the conflict ends. Approximately 5 million barrels of oil per day have been lost due to the crises in the 1970s and 1979, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine removed about 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas from international markets.

Escalating Tensions and Potential for Further Disruption

The situation remains volatile. Iran has threatened to lay mines across the entire Persian Gulf if its coasts are attacked. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump initially threatened to “obliterate” Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened, though he later postponed military strikes pending further talks. Trump claimed to have held “very, very strong talks” with Iranian leaders, suggesting a potential deal could be near, but Iran has denied these negotiations took place.

Broader Global Impacts

The crisis is already impacting global stock markets, which experienced a sharp decline following Trump’s initial threats. The potential for further disruption to energy supplies raises concerns about inflation, economic slowdown, and geopolitical instability.
