US to be ‘judicious’ with power against Iran as Trump seeks to avoid ‘Libya scenario’ – Envoy

US President Donald Trump is seeking to avoid destabilizing Iran in the way Libya was after the removal of Muammar Gaddafi, according to a US envoy, and will therefore be “judicious” in how it uses its power against Tehran.

the envoy explained that Trump has issued an ultimatum to iran but “does not want to see this spit out of control,” adding, “We don’t want to destabilize a country like Iran the way Libya was by the [Barack] Obama administration when Gaddafi was taken out and there was no plan for the day after that.”

Washington will therefore “be judicious in how we use our power” against Iran, the envoy stressed.

Tehran maintains its nuclear programme is peaceful and denies plans to develop a nuclear weapon. Iranian authorities stated in mid-January that they had quelled a wave of violent protests, which they allege were instigated by the US and Israel in an attempt to trigger regime change.

Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National security Council, reported progress towards negotiations with Washington following talks with russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday.

The Kremlin has also urged dialog, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov warning that “any forceful actions can only create chaos in the region and lead to very hazardous consequences.”
