Hezbollah and Iran Launch Coordinated Strikes on Israel, Escalating Regional Conflict
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, and Iran itself launched a coordinated attack on northern Israel on Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict. The strikes, which included the use of cluster munitions, reach as the U.S.-Israeli campaign targeting Iran, Operations Epic Fury and Roaring Lion, enters its eleventh day.
Coordinated Attack Strategy
According to Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies and the Misgav Institute, Hezbollah has “fully joined the war” and is operating in close coordination with Iran. “Most of Hezbollah’s rockets and drones are launched simultaneously with the Iranian missiles,” Michael stated while speaking from a bomb shelter near Tel Aviv .
Use of Cluster Munitions
Israel confirmed on Tuesday that Iran was employing cluster munitions, presenting a complex challenge to its air defenses. These munitions burst open in the air, releasing numerous smaller bomblets over a wide area, making them difficult to intercept and highly lethal .
Escalation Amidst Ongoing Operations
The coordinated strikes occurred during the eleventh day of Operations Epic Fury and Roaring Lion, the joint U.S.-Israeli campaign targeting Iran. This timing suggests a deliberate attempt to escalate the conflict and potentially broaden its scope.
Hezbollah Faces Growing Discontent
As Hezbollah engages in renewed fighting with Israel, the group is facing increasing criticism and discontent from its base, as well as challenges from Lebanese authorities. This marks a shift from previous conflicts, where Hezbollah enjoyed broader support within Lebanon . Displacement of civilians in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs has been reported, with many seeking shelter in schools and public spaces .
Israeli Response and Potential Ground Invasion
Israel has responded with near-daily strikes against targets it identifies as Hezbollah sites throughout Lebanon, from Tripoli in the north to the southern border. These strikes have resulted in at least 217 deaths and nearly 700 injuries, with hundreds of thousands displaced . At least 12 Israeli soldiers have been injured in the renewed fighting. Evacuation warnings have been issued for large areas of Lebanon, including parts of Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has stated that “all options remain on the table,” including a potential large-scale ground invasion of Lebanon .
Historical Context
The current conflict builds upon a previous war between Israel and Hezbollah that ended in November 2024 with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. However, Israel has maintained that Hezbollah violated the ceasefire by attempting to rearm and rebuild its forces, leading to near-daily strikes even before the recent escalation .
Hezbollah’s Role in the ‘Axis of Resistance’
Hezbollah is a key component of the Iran-led ‘Axis of Resistance,’ a coalition of groups in the Middle East that oppose Israel and the United States.
