Iran War Disrupts Global Oil Supply, DoorDash Offers Gas Subsidies to Drivers
The ongoing conflict involving Iran has sent global oil prices soaring, exacerbating an existing national affordability crisis. In response, companies like DoorDash are implementing measures to alleviate the financial burden on their delivery drivers.
Strait of Hormuz Blockade and Rising Oil Prices
Joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, beginning on February 28, 2026, prompted Iran to restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transportation. Approximately one-fifth of the world’s total oil consumption passes through this strait and its partial blockage has significantly impacted supply chains.
Gas prices have risen sharply in several regions. According to the Recent York Times, prices in states like Texas and Colorado have increased by more than 30% in the past two weeks. Nationwide, the average gas price is currently just four cents short of $4 per gallon, as reported by AAA.
DoorDash Announces Relief Program for Drivers
DoorDash announced on Monday, March 24, 2026, an “emergency relief program” to support its drivers facing higher fuel costs. Drivers in the U.S. With a DoorDash Crimson Visa debit card will receive 10% cash back on gas purchases, regardless of whether they are actively making deliveries.
Dashers who drive 125 miles or more per week on the job will be eligible for a weekly fuel relief payment ranging from $5 to $15. DoorDash estimates that drivers could save between $1 and $1.50 per gallon through these weekly relief payments.
The relief programs are scheduled to run until April 26, 2026.
Increased Interest in Electric Vehicles
Amidst rising gas prices, consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is growing. DoorDash is also promoting its existing program offering financial assistance for drivers transitioning to EVs, including 2% cash back on EV charging and other discounts.
According to the car-buying platform CarEdge, online searches for EV models have increased by 20% since the start of the conflict. Auto retailer CarMax has also observed a similar uptick in EV searches, as reported by Sherwood News.
Looking Ahead
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, and the duration of the disruption to oil supplies is uncertain. The impact on global energy markets and consumer prices will likely depend on the progress of diplomatic efforts and the resolution of the conflict. Companies like DoorDash are responding to the immediate needs of their workforce, although consumers are increasingly considering alternative transportation options like electric vehicles.
