Hyrcanian Forests: A Threatened Ancient Ecosystem

Table of Contents

The Hyrcanian forests, stretching along the southern coast of the caspian Sea, are a globally significant relic temperate forest ecosystem. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, this area represents a biodiversity hotspot facing increasing threats.

A Unique Biodiversity Hotspot

Covering approximately 1.85 million hectares, the hyrcanian forests boast an extraordinary range of plant and animal life. More than 3,200 plant species thrive within the forests, alongside 180 bird species and a diverse array of mammals. This rich biodiversity is a result of the forests’ long history, having survived for over 25 million years.

Past Loss and Current Threats

Despite their resilience, the Hyrcanian forests have experienced significant losses. Since the 1950s, over half of their original area has been diminished, primarily due to land conversion for agricultural purposes and urban expansion. These pressures continue to threaten the long-term health of the ecosystem.

recent Wildfires Exacerbate the Problem

in November 2025,a significant wildfire destroyed approximately 600 hectares of the Hyrcanian forests. Reports indicate that delayed and insufficient firefighting responses contributed to the extent of the damage, highlighting the need for improved preventative measures and rapid response capabilities. The incident underscores the vulnerability of the forests to climate change-related events and the importance of effective conservation strategies.

Conservation Efforts and Future Outlook

Protecting the Hyrcanian forests is crucial for preserving a unique and irreplaceable ecosystem. Ongoing conservation initiatives focus on enduring land management practices, reforestation efforts, and strengthening fire prevention and control measures. Continued international collaboration and increased investment in conservation are essential to ensure the long-term survival of these ancient forests.
