US Claims Iran’s New Supreme Leader Wounded in Attacks
United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has claimed that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been wounded in US-Israeli attacks on the country. Hegseth’s Assessment and Concerns Over Legitimacy
Speaking at a press conference at the Pentagon on Friday, Hegseth stated that Khamenei “is wounded and likely disfigured.” He questioned the nature of Khamenei’s first public statement since assuming the role of Supreme Leader – a written statement read out on Iranian state television on Thursday – noting the absence of video or audio. “Why a written statement?” Hegseth asked, suggesting it indicated Khamenei’s compromised condition. “His father — dead. Iranian Response and Reports of Injury
An Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday that the newly appointed Supreme Leader was lightly injured but continuing to operate, following a state television report describing him as “war-wounded.” However, Iranian leaders have not immediately responded to Hegseth’s more recent and detailed claims.
Escalation of US-Israeli Operations
Hegseth indicated that the US is prepared to escalate its military operations against Iran. He stated that today would see “the highest volume of US strikes on Iran yet,” but emphasized that President Donald Trump would determine the “pace, tempo and timing of this conflict.” The Hill reported on this anticipated increase in strikes.
He also claimed that over 15,000 Iranian targets have been struck since the conflict began on February 28, asserting that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely weakened. Hegseth stated that Iran’s air defenses, air force, and navy have been effectively neutralized, and its missile and drone capabilities are being rapidly degraded. He further claimed that Iran’s missile production facilities have been “defeated” and “destroyed.”
Blast Near Tehran Rally
A large explosion struck near Ferdowsi Square in Tehran on Friday, where a Quds Day rally was underway. The annual rally commemorates Jerusalem and demonstrates support for the Palestinian cause. Iranian state television reported one fatality. The cause of the blast remains unclear, with no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) or Iranian authorities.
Ali Larijani, Iran’s national security chief, dismissed the suspected Israeli strike as an act of “desperation,” stating that a strong nation would not target demonstrations. He expressed confidence in the Iranian people’s resilience and determination.
