Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates After Khamenei’s Death

Amman, Jordan – The Middle East is experiencing heightened turmoil following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint U.S. And Israeli airstrike. Iran has responded with missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf Arab states, while Israel has launched retaliatory strikes in central Tehran.

Escalation of Hostilities

The Iranian government, despite the loss of its spiritual leader, continues to launch strikes against Israel and U.S. Targets in Gulf states, Iraq, and Jordan. Explosions were reported in Tehran on Sunday morning, with the Israeli military stating it is targeting “the Iranian terror regime” in the heart of the city and working to establish air superiority.

Khamenei’s Death and Succession

Iranian state media confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, on Saturday, following airstrikes on his office in Tehran. Khamenei had held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. A three-person temporary leadership council has been established to govern the country under Islamic law until a panel of Shia clerics selects a fresh spiritual leader.

Mourners gathered in Tehran’s Enghelab Square and other cities to commemorate Khamenei’s death. However, reports also indicate some Iranians celebrated his demise. One Tehran resident, identified only as Roxana, described celebrating with friends before learning a friend was shot by security forces while celebrating in Karaj near Tehran.

Regional Impact and International Response

The conflict is impacting the wider region. In Lebanon, Hezbollah announced a commemoration in Beirut. In Iraq, the government blocked access to Baghdad’s Green Zone to protect embassies. Jordan experienced air raid sirens and intercepted missiles. The Gulf region, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has been directly affected, with attacks targeting luxury hotels and airports. Several major airports, including Dubai International Airport, have suspended operations.

Economic Concerns

Iran has threatened to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for Gulf oil exports. The OPEC group of oil-producing countries is scheduled to meet to discuss increasing production in an attempt to stabilize oil prices.

U.S. Response

President Trump warned Iran against further retaliation, stating, “THEY BETTER NOT DO THAT, HOWEVER, Due to the fact that IF THEY DO, WE WILL HIT THEM WITH A FORCE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE!” He also suggested a potential swift resolution to the conflict.
