U.S. Temporarily Closes Basra Consulate Amidst Rising Threats from Iran

The United States has temporarily closed its consulate in Basra, Iraq, and is evacuating diplomatic staff and their families following a rocket attack earlier this month and escalating threats attributed to the Iranian government and Iran-backed militias. The decision to close the consulate comes after a rocket attack on Basra’s airport, which houses the U.S. Consulate. No casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred approximately a week after a Shiite militia vowed revenge for an earlier attack on the Iranian consulate in Basra. The State Department characterized the closure as a “temporary relocation” in response to “increasing and specific threats.”

Iran’s Alleged Role

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo directly warned Iran, stating that the U.S. Would hold Iran directly responsible for any harm to Americans or U.S. Diplomatic facilities in Iraq, whether perpetrated by Iranian forces or associated proxy militias. This follows accusations that Iranian-backed militias were responsible for the initial rocket attack.

Basra’s Strategic Importance and Recent Unrest

Basra is Iraq’s oil capital and main port, but it remains one of the country’s least developed regions. The city has experienced significant unrest in recent months, with protests erupting over corruption and poor public services. Protesters previously targeted the Iranian consulate in Basra, storming the building and causing substantial damage, blaming Iran for contributing to Iraq’s problems.
