BAGHDAD – Nearly 5,000 Iraqis have signed an oath to help defend Iran in the event of a US attack on the Islamic Republic.

According to a statement from the mass of volunteers, thousands of people in Iraq’s Diyala province gathered to declare their intention to defend Iraq and its eastern neighbors, as well as Iran-backed armed groups, without any compensation.

“We announce our willingness to voluntarily support our security forces, the Popular Mobilization Forces, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and we firmly reject American intervention in the Islamic Republic,” the statement said, as quoted from Middle East EyeMonday (9/2/2026).

The statement comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, even though the two countries have been holding talks in Oman.

Washington announced new sanctions on Friday aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports, including measures targeting 14 ships flying flags of countries such as Turkey, India and the United Arab Emirates. Washington also announced sanctions against 15 entities and two people.
