Vodafone Ireland Achieves Satellite Connectivity Milestone
Ireland has witnessed a significant advancement in mobile technology with the completion of its first mobile video phone call via satellite using a standard smartphone. The call, completed on March 26, 2026, connected Vodafone engineer Robert Ivers from Clare Island, Co. Mayo – an area with no traditional mobile coverage – to Vodafone Ireland CEO Sabrina Casalta in Dublin. [1]
Bridging the Coverage Gap with Satellite Technology
This breakthrough demonstrates the potential of satellite technology to extend mobile connectivity to remote areas of Ireland, enhance network resilience, and ensure consistent communication access. Traditionally, satellite phones have been bulky, expensive, and reserved for specialized users like sailors, rescue teams, and aid workers. [1] This latest capability allows standard smartphones to connect to networks via satellite, opening up possibilities for widespread access.
Vodafone’s Vision for Connectivity
Vodafone is actively pursuing further technical development and regulatory approvals to bring satellite connectivity to its customers in Ireland. [1] The announcement coincided with a visit from Vodafone Group Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle, marking 25 years of Vodafone’s presence in Ireland and a meeting with Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
Industry and Government Support
Margherita Della Valle emphasized Vodafone’s commitment to pushing connectivity boundaries and investing in impactful technologies. [1] Taoiseach Martin highlighted the innovation’s potential to strengthen resilience, connect remote communities, and support emergency services. He also acknowledged Vodafone’s contribution to Ireland’s digital economy, connectivity, and employment. [1]
