Ireland Defies Trend, Will Not Ban Greyhound Racing

Despite recent bans in Wales and Scotland, Ireland has no plans to outlaw greyhound racing, Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon confirmed this week. The decision comes as animal welfare concerns continue to mount across the United Kingdom, prompting calls for a complete end to the sport.

Scottish and Welsh Parliaments Lead the Ban

The Scottish Parliament passed legislation on Tuesday outlawing greyhound racing, following a similar vote in the Welsh Senedd. The Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Scotland) Bill makes it an offence to allow a greyhound to compete on an oval racetrack in Scotland, carrying a potential penalty of up to five years imprisonment and a £20,000 fine. The BBC reports that the sport was already in decline in Scotland, with the last track closing in 2023.

In Wales, the Senedd also voted to end greyhound racing, supported by animal welfare groups who cite concerns about the well-being of the animals involved.

Ireland Stands Firm

However, Minister Heydon firmly rejected calls to follow suit, stating he “do[es] not intend to ban greyhound racing here.” He defended the industry, emphasizing the livelihoods of the “thousands of people who function in our greyhound racing industry and who love the dogs and care for them greatly.” The Irish Times reported on the Minister’s comments in the Dáil.

Animal Welfare Concerns Remain

The decision in Ireland has drawn criticism from animal welfare advocates, who point to statistics highlighting the risks faced by racing greyhounds. Ruth Coppinger, a Solidarity TD, cited figures from Dogs Trust Ireland, stating that 869 dogs had died on Irish racetracks and 2,343 had been injured over the past six years. The Irish Times also noted Coppinger’s claim that the sport is “cruel for the animals involved” and largely propped up by state funding.

Industry Response

As of March 21, 2026, there has been no official response from the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry to the decisions in Wales and Scotland. The Journal confirms that Ireland will not be moving to ban greyhound racing despite the recent votes in the other two nations.
