Statkraft Launches Ireland’s First Four-Hour Grid-Scale Battery Storage System at Cushaling Wind Farm

Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer, has inaugurated Ireland’s inaugural four-hour grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) co-located with its wind farm in Cushaling, County Offaly. The 22.8-megawatt (MW) battery system is capable of supplying renewable electricity to 10,000 homes for four hours, even after wind generation ceases [RTE].

Addressing Intermittency with Long-Duration Storage

Traditionally, grid-scale battery storage in Ireland has ranged from 30 minutes to two hours in duration. Statkraft’s new system represents a shift towards longer-duration storage, crucial for mitigating the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like wind [RTE]. Between 10% and 14% of potential wind energy is currently lost annually in Ireland due to turbines being curtailed during periods of low electricity demand [RTE]. The four-hour battery allows Statkraft to capture and store this excess energy for use when demand is higher, ultimately aiming to reduce electricity costs [RTE].

Rapid Response and Grid Stability

The BESS boasts exceptionally rapid response times, activating in less than one-tenth of a second when called upon by Eirgrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator [RTE]. This rapid response capability enhances the stability and flexibility of the Irish electricity grid, particularly as it integrates more renewable energy sources.

Cushaling: Evolving into a Clean Energy Hub

Statkraft’s 55.8 MW Cushaling Wind Farm is located adjacent to the new Battery Energy Storage System and the Edenderry power station [RTE]. The company plans to further develop the site into a fully hybridised clean energy hub by adding a large-scale solar farm, commencing this year. The battery system will store electricity generated from both the wind and solar farms for future use [RTE]. Statkraft’s Investment in Irish Renewables

Statkraft has invested over €1 billion in renewable energy projects in Ireland since 2018, encompassing onshore and offshore wind, solar, battery storage and grid services [Statkraft]. Sustainability Fund for Local Initiatives
