Ireland’s Oldest Man to Lead Clara’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade

A Lifetime of Memories

Paddy Claffey, a native of Ferbane, will turn 105 next month. RTÉ News reports that he expressed his surprise and honor at being chosen for the role. He fondly recalls childhood St. Patrick’s Day traditions, including gathering shamrock from the fields. He also reminisced about participating in parades in Athlone, where he enjoyed step dancing.

Celebrating a Community Tradition

The Clara parade is organized by Bertie McMahon, who is celebrating his 50th year of organizing parades in the town. The Offaly Express notes that this year’s event is a special occasion marking this milestone for McMahon. He began organizing Christmas parades in 1976 and extended his efforts to the St. Patrick’s Day parade, bringing bands and entertainers from across Ireland to the town.

Longevity and Legacy

Claffey attributes his long life to “good food, a good family and hard work.” He quit smoking at age 45 and has not resumed the habit. His family will be traveling from Wexford, Cork, and Galway to join him for the parade. Midlands 103 reports that referee Carthage Buckley will also be honored at the event, cutting the ribbon on the day.
