IRHS Boys’ Volleyball Poised for Continued Success in 2026

The Indian River High School (IRHS) boys’ volleyball team is looking to build upon a successful 2025 season, aiming to return to the DIAA playoffs and make a deeper run. Head coach Mike Markovic, entering his third season, emphasizes skill development and reaching the team’s full potential.

2025 Season Recap

In 2025, the Indians finished with a 9-6 record, highlighted by a strong mid-season surge that saw them win six consecutive matches and seven of eight. Despite a 3-0 loss to the eventual state champion Salesianum in the opening round of the DIAA playoffs, the team demonstrated significant improvement throughout the year.

Key Returning Players

The team will be led by a core group of returning seniors, including Zach Hirn and Amor “A.C.” Townsend. Hirn, a junior setter in 2025, earned Second Team All-State honors with a 98% serve percentage and 360 assists. Townsend has emerged as an excellent outside hitter, known for his strong defense and offensive capabilities.

Additional key seniors expected to contribute include rightside hitter Bruce Sarafa and setter Jeyson Moussa.

Rising Juniors and Latest Additions

Juniors Shane Forjan and Noah Nayden are poised to make a significant impact as middle blockers, bringing aggressive attacking and a dominant blocking presence. The team also welcomes contributions from juniors Lucas Mahaffey, Aidin Schaub, and Rafael Terrones Cruz, who stood out on the junior varsity team last year.

Seniors Andres Lucenti and Jeyson Moussa will bolster the back-court defense, even as newcomer Lucas De Los Rios, a senior, is expected to contribute as an outside hitter with his athleticism.

Team Goals and Outlook

Coach Markovic stresses the importance of strong defense and serve-receive as crucial components for overall team success. He believes that if the team can address these areas, they have a fine chance of qualifying for the DIAA postseason tournament.

Season Opener

The Indians will kick off their 2026 season with a non-conference home game against Glasgow on Monday, March 23, at 4 p.m.
