Irish Naval Service Launches New Recruitment Campaign to Tackle Staffing Shortages

The Irish Naval Service has initiated a new recruitment drive, featuring interactive online videos designed to attract potential candidates and address critical staffing shortages. The campaign, unveiled on Thursday, February 19, 2026, aims to showcase the diverse roles and opportunities within the service.

Behind the Scenes with ‘Navy Career Explorer Videos’

Developed in partnership with Irish company Trainify, the ‘Navy Career Explorer Videos’ offer a behind-the-scenes seem at life in the Irish Naval Service. These interactive videos allow viewers to explore 12 different roles essential to the operation of a naval vessel, providing insights into the daily responsibilities, teamwork, and career prospects available as reported by RTÉ.

Addressing Staffing Levels

While staffing levels have increased in recent years to approximately 850 personnel, the Naval Service still falls short of its minimum requirement of 1,094 according to RTÉ. This shortfall has impacted the navy’s ability to fully utilize its fleet.

Fleet Capacity and Operational Challenges

Currently, the Irish Navy operates eight naval ships. Although, due to personnel shortages, particularly in key specialist roles like radar operators, mechanics, and communications specialists, the service can typically deploy only three or four vessels on any given day as noted by former Independent TD and Defence Forces member Cathal Berry. This limitation results in significant state assets remaining idle in Cork.

Diverse Roles Highlighted in Recruitment

The new recruitment campaign highlights a range of roles within the Naval Service, including seaman, operations officer, and chef as detailed on the Defence Forces website. The Defence Forces offer various entry levels, including Naval Service Officer – Cadet, Naval Service Recruit, and Direct Entry for specialist roles.

Investment in Modernization

Concerns have been raised regarding the navy’s equipment and resources, particularly in relation to countering drones and protecting undersea cables. Defence Minister Helen McEntee has affirmed the government’s commitment to investing in modern technology, including radar, sonar, and counter-drone capabilities, with implementation expected before Ireland’s presidency of the European Council in July as reported by RTÉ.

Naval Service Vessels and Operations

Currently, two of the navy’s eight vessels are in operational reserve, while one is undergoing fitout and will begin patrolling later in the year. The remaining ships are regularly deployed on maritime defence and security operations according to a Defence Forces spokesperson.
