Irish Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien is set to bring a package of measures to Cabinet next week that will extend the eligibility of the country’s popular solar panel grant scheme to houses built and occupied before 2025. The initiative, which currently applies only to homes built before 2021, aims to help more households transition to cleaner energy amid rising costs driven by energy market pressures.
Expanding the Solar PV Grant to Newer Builds
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland administers the existing Solar PV grant scheme under the Microgeneration Support Scheme. Successful applicants can receive a maximum grant of €1,800 paid after works finish. Under the upcoming proposal, eligibility will stretch to cover homes built and occupied up to 2025, capturing a cohort that has lagged behind older properties in adopting solar technology.
According to the department, homes constructed between 2020 and 2025 are less likely to feature solar PV installations than those built between 2015 and 2020. Older homes in that previous window frequently installed solar arrays to satisfy the renewable energy requirements of earlier Building Regulations.
Building Regulations and the Shift to Heat Pumps
The lower adoption rate in recent builds stems largely from regulatory updates introduced in 2021. Those revisions to building standards prompted a greater share of new construction projects to install heat pumps rather than solar panels to meet heightened renewable energy obligations.
Minister O’Brien’s push to include these newer properties in the grant program addresses ongoing household affordability concerns. Escalating energy expenses, exacerbated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have intensified the financial pressure on residential consumers seeking to lower utility bills through microgeneration.
Grant Structure and Operational History
The maximum grant cap of €1,800 will remain unchanged under the new expansion package heading to Cabinet. The underlying scheme officially commenced operations in February 2022, replacing an earlier pilot program designed to test residential uptake of photovoltaic technology.
