Traditional weightlifting relies on concentric and eccentric muscle actions that build power and mobility yet elevate the risk of sudden strains when external loads spike. To mitigate those risks, Avalos advocates for isometric training—workouts where muscles fire under high tension without any joint movement, such as a standard plank.
“I’m a big fan of isometrics because they let golfers produce a lot of force without a lot of moving parts,” Avalos explains, noting that the method reduces the chance of form breakdown while targeting key stability positions. Overcoming Isometrics for Maximum Force Production
Avalos divides isometric exercises into two distinct categories designed for different athletic adaptations. The first group, known as overcoming isometrics, involves short bursts of maximum effort lasting five to 10 seconds across three to five repetitions. These movements require a golfer to push or pull against an immovable object, such as pressing laterally against a wall with the inside foot elevated off the floor. Another variation features a push-pull setup where an athlete braces a bar against a fixed surface and pushes with one arm while pulling with the other.
These high-intensity bouts build raw force production quickly. Because the resistance does not yield, athletes can safely express high force outputs without managing momentum or deceleration phases that typically strain connective tissues during traditional lifts.
Yielding Isometrics for Positional Control and Rehab
The second category, yielding isometrics, requires holding demanding positions for 30 to 60 seconds with sub-maximal effort for up to five repetitions. Avalos states that these movements help golfers gain strength across ranges of motion they frequently avoid due to joint stiffness or past injuries. They offer particular utility for desk-bound professionals or frequent travelers who lack immediate access to a complete gymnasium.
Three specific yielding isometric exercises recommended by Avalos target the lower body, hips, and rotational stability:

- Isometric Wall Squat: Position your back and shoulders flat against a wall with feet shoulder-width apart, sliding down until your knees reach approximately a 90-degree angle. Maintain backward pressure against the wall while holding a dumbbell in one hand and pressing the opposite forearm hard into the wall to create external rotation. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds per side.
- Isometric Hip Thrust: Place your upper back on a bench and your heels on a box of equal height. Drive through your heels to lift your hips until your torso forms a straight line from shoulders to heels, engaging the core with ribs pulled down to prevent lower back hyperextension. Hold the position for 60 seconds, squeezing the glutes tightly.
By integrating these stationary holds into a weekly routine, golfers can build resilient joints and durable muscle stability without enduring the deep post-workout soreness associated with heavy eccentric lifting.
