Hostage Exchange Continues, Future of Gaza Remains Uncertain

Israel returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians on Wednesday. This followed Hamas returning the remains of an Israeli hostage a day earlier, as part of the ongoing exchange under last month’s U.S.-brokered cease-fire. The initial phase of the cease-fire is nearing completion.

the International Committee of the Red Cross assisted in transferring the bodies to Gaza.

Hamas says it intends to return the remains of two remaining hostages – one israeli and one Thai national – as agreed.

turkish, Qatari, and egyptian mediators met in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the next phase of the cease-fire, wich was initially agreed upon on october 10.

Future phases include deploying an armed International Stabilization Force (ISF) and creating an international body to govern Gaza and oversee rebuilding efforts.

The ISF will focus on maintaining security and disarming Hamas, a key demand from israel. Indonesia has offered to contribute 20,000 peacekeepers to the force.

Manny details of the plan remain unclear, and the timeline for implementing the fragile cease-fire is uncertain, despite reports of violations from both sides.

Currently, moast Palestinians remain displaced and rely on humanitarian aid. Hamas still controls a significant portion of Gaza, and rebuilding has barely started.

Under the terms of the cease-fire, Israel agreed to return 15 Palestinian bodies for each hostage recovered. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that 345 Palestinian bodies have been returned so far.

Identifying the remains is difficult, as the ministry says it lacks sufficient DNA testing kits in Gaza. Only 99 bodies have been identified.

Israel is mourning Dror Or,the latest hostage whose remains were returned by hamas. The israeli military confirmed that Or and his wife, Yonat Or, were killed during the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7, 2023.

Before their deaths, the couple helped their two children, Alma and Noam, escape their burning home through a window. The children were later abducted but released in a hostage deal in November 2023.

The Hamas incursion on October 7 resulted in 1,200 deaths in southern Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages, leading to Israel’s military response.

With the return of Or’s remains, almost all hostages have been recovered or accounted for.

Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesperson, stated on Wednesday that the group is committed to returning the remains of the two remaining hostages and completing the exchange.
