Israel Intercepts Gaza Aid Flotilla as President Connolly’s Sister Participates

Israeli forces have begun intercepting vessels participating in an aid flotilla headed for Gaza, with reports indicating the interception of multiple boats in international waters. Among those on board is Margaret Connolly, sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, a General Practitioner and activist based in County Sligo.

Flotilla Interception and Claims of Illegal Actions

Israeli army radio reported on Wednesday that Israel had begun taking control of aid ships bound for Gaza far from Israeli shores, citing an Israeli source. The Global Sumud Flotilla, which includes the intercepted vessels, stated that Israeli military boats “illegally surrounded the flotilla in international waters and threatened kidnapping and violence.” According to the flotilla’s statement, communications with 11 vessels have been lost, and Israeli media claims seven boats have been intercepted.

Margaret Connolly’s Involvement and Motivation

Margaret Connolly, one of President Catherine Connolly’s thirteen siblings, joined the flotilla to protest the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Prior to her departure, Connolly stated, “I have joined the flotilla because we cannot stand by whereas millions are subjected to forced starvation and an illegal siege.” She is originally from County Galway and currently resides in County Sligo.

Previous Aid Efforts and the Global Sumud Flotilla

This interception follows a similar attempt by the Global Sumud Flotilla on April 12th, when a fleet carrying humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza departed from the Spanish port of Barcelona, aiming to break the Israeli blockade. The current flotilla represents a renewed effort to deliver aid to the region.

International Law Concerns

The Global Sumud Flotilla has called on governments to intervene, demanding accountability for what they describe as “flagrant violations of international law” and Israel’s “ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.”

President Connolly’s Stance on Gaza

President Catherine Connolly, elected in October 2025, has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza. She has expressed distrust of European Union policies and is expected to be a unifying voice on major international issues. In September 2025, she faced criticism for describing Hamas as “part of the fabric of the Palestinian people,” and later stated that both Israel and Hamas have “committed war crimes.”
