Revitalizing Italy’s Villages: A New Foundation Initiative Connects Diaspora with Homeland
A new project launched by the Fondazione italiani.it ETS aims to bridge the emotional connection Italians abroad feel to their ancestral homeland with concrete economic and social development for Italy’s smaller municipalities. The initiative, “Comuni italiani.it: Roots, Community and Territory,” seeks to transform this bond into a catalyst for revitalization, combating depopulation and fostering sustainable growth.
The Italian Diaspora: A Global Community
The initiative recognizes the significant presence of Italians and people of Italian descent worldwide. Estimates suggest a global Italian diaspora of up to 180 million people, including those with partial Italian ancestry. Argentina and Brazil host the largest populations of Italian descendants, followed by the United States. Significant Italian communities similarly exist in South America, Australia, Germany, and France, a testament to past emigration waves.
“Comuni italiani.it”: A Multifaceted Approach
The Fondazione italiani.it ETS, leveraging over 15 years of experience promoting Italian culture internationally, positions itself as a crucial link between Italian villages and the global Italian diaspora. The project is designed as a civic and cultural mission, focused on preserving local identity and bolstering economic networks.
Strategic Objectives
- Promotion of Local Heritage: Highlighting not only major landmarks but also local history, artisanal traditions, and culinary specialties.
- Grassroots Tourism: Encouraging descendants to rediscover their origins and experience their ancestral towns as “temporary citizens.”
- Support for Local Economies: Providing international platforms for local businesses and attracting investment through the Foundation’s network.
- Combating Depopulation: Facilitating new residential projects and equipping villages with digital tools to enhance their competitiveness.
Digital Tools for Municipalities
The project offers partner municipalities access to a centralized and integrated digital platform, providing a range of services:
- Global Visibility: Multilingual articles, videos, and social media campaigns on the italiani.it platform, reaching millions of users monthly.
- One-Stop Shop for Italians Abroad (SUIM): A dedicated service assisting Italians living abroad with inquiries and interactions with their ancestral city halls.
- Virtual Museum of Emigrants: A digital archive for preserving photos, letters, and stories of Italian emigrants, transforming historical memory into a cultural attraction.
- Technical Support and Mentorship: Access to an expert committee providing guidance on event planning, funding applications, and agreements to encourage the return of descendants.
- Shared Event Calendar: A centralized calendar for local events, associations, and organizations to maximize visibility.
A Two-Phase Collaboration
Partnerships with municipalities follow a structured process. An initial phase focuses on assessing the territory’s unique characteristics and potential. This is followed by an operational phase, implementing concrete actions to promote the area.
Joining the Network
The Fondazione italiani.it ETS invites mayors and local administrations to participate in this initiative, viewing it as an opportunity to connect with a vast network of “ambassadors” eager to reinvest in and revitalize Italian traditions. The project emphasizes that Italy represents a sense of belonging for millions, and now is the time to cultivate that connection.
