Italy is enduring a prolonged fourth heatwave lasting 13 days, with high temperatures projected to continue until August 17, according to data from the Italian Ministry of Health and meteorological reports.
Heatwave Duration and Structural Climate Shifts
The current heatwave began on July 29, following a summer marked by unusually brief intervals between extreme temperature events. According to Lorenzo Giovannini, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Trento, the frequency and intensity of these weather patterns point to a structural change in the climate driven by the northward shift of the African anticyclone. In previous decades, heat spikes driven by hot air from North Africa were regularly interrupted by the Azores high-pressure system returning the peninsula to seasonal norms. Researchers are studying the persistent southward movement of cooler air alongside the northward expansion of African air masses, which currently leaves Italy exposed to prolonged periods of excessive heat.
Agricultural Impacts and Alpine Safety Closures
The prolonged dry spell and elevated temperatures have impacted ecosystems and farming throughout northern regions. In Veneto, severe drought has accelerated the upstream intrusion of saltwater along the lower Po River, threatening irrigation supplies. Agricultural sectors managing corn and rice crops face mounting pressures from both drought and localized fires. High altitude environments are also reacting to the warmth; the zero-degree thermal line reached 4,300 meters on Mont Blanc—just 500 meters below the summit. Following earlier restrictions on the Italian climbing routes, French authorities closed the Tête Rousse and Goûter refuges to protect mountaineers from unstable terrain.

The Italian Ministry of Health monitors urban heat conditions through its national bulletin, showing a slight decrease in peak alert levels. Out of 27 monitored cities, 19 remained under red alerts, down from a complete saturation of all 27 cities on August 4. Meteorological forecasts indicate that northern and central regions will maintain clear skies and intense heat through mid-August, with maximum temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius in central areas, accompanied by occasional afternoon thunderstorms along the Alpine and Apennine ridges.
